Return secures financial close, Vattenfall toll for 800MWh Dutch battery

BESS owner-operator Return has signed a long-term toll with power firm Vattenfall for its 200MW/800MWh Sirius BESS project in the Netherlands, concurrent with financial close.

The long-term fixed-price toll with Vattenfall helped the project secure project financing under a €400 million (US$463 million) package from banks NG, NatWest, Deutsche Bank, ABN AMRO and Rabobank.

The 4-hour Sirius battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Winschoten, Groningen, will require €180 million in investment, some of which will come from the financing and some from Return.

Sirius will connect to transmission system operator TenneT’s grid in Meeden under a time-dependent transport rights (TDTR) agreement, similar to a flexible connection agreement (FCA) in Germany. It imposes some constraints on the BESS’ operation, but enables it to connect within existing grid constraints while supporting the wider system, Return said.

Battery Asset Management Summit Europe is the annual meeting for owners, operators, investors, and optimisation specialists working with operational BESS assets across the continent. The Summit focuses on how to maximise performance and revenue, manage degradation, integrate advanced optimisation software, navigate evolving market and regulatory frameworks, and plan for repowering or end-of-life strategies. With insights from Europe’s most active storage markets, it equips attendees with practical guidance to run resilient, profitable battery portfolios as the sector scales.

We hear from Nikhil Koppaka, senior commercial manager for BESS owner-operator BW ESS on the big opportunities and challenges in Germany’s grid-scale energy storage market.

A trio of BESS updates in Germany from power firm Alpiq, CATL-backed system integrator CNTE and virtual tolling platform Terralayr, totalling around 260MW of operational capacity.

If BESS are to be given restricted grid access, they should be given a commensurate reduction in the BKZ fee, Marie-Sophie Braun, head of markets & regulatory affairs for developer Kyon Energy, said.

The UK government has launched a new grant funding programme for energy storage technologies that can provide inter-day and seasonal energy shifting applications.
