Developer-operator Plus Power is now operating its 175MW/350MWh Cross Town Energy Storage facility in Gorham, Maine, US.
According to Plus Power, Cross Town is the largest battery energy storage system (BESS) of its kind on the ISO New England grid.
The company also noted that Maine’s leadership in battery storage policies prompted Plus Power to invest in Gorham and develop Cross Town, which contributes to the state’s policy goal of deploying 400MW of battery energy storage by 2030.
Situated on approximately 5 acres, Cross Town connects near Central Maine Power’s 115kV Moshers substation, an area with significant transmission grid congestion. Its location helps reduce congestion and supports the transfer of wind energy from Northern Maine to meet electricity demand in Southern Maine and Boston.

Cross Town is also expected to assist ISO New England in compensating for the power capacity reduced by the retirement of gas and other power plants.
Cross Town includes 156 units of Sungrow’s flagship PowerTitan BESS. Additionally, Plus Power collaborated with Maine-based Cianbro Corporation on the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the facility.
Sungrow introduced PowerTitan 3.0 in June 2025, the successor to its previous 20-foot containerised PowerTitan 2.0.
It is available in three sizes: 10-foot ‘Flex’, 20-foot ‘Class’, and 30-foot ‘Plus’, catering to durations between 2 and 12 hours. The 10-foot model has a capacity of 3.45MWh, the 20-foot offers 6.9MWh, and the 30-foot provides 12.5 MWh. Sungrow also stated that these units can withstand extreme conditions, from -40°C to +55°C, and operate at altitudes up to 5,000 meters.
Cross Town is Plus Power’s second BESS project in New England. Its 150MW/300MWh Cranberry Point Energy Storage in Carver, Massachusetts, started operation in spring 2025.
It supported ISO New England during a heat-driven scarcity event on 24 June, when demand exceeded the forecasted peak by 200MW.
Plus Power says this event drove prices up to US$1,110/MWh, more than twice the usual daily average. Cranberry Point was fully available and delivered energy to the grid upon ISO-NE’s request through its generation dispatch system.
In a 2023 petition to the Carver, Massachusetts government, Plus Power noted that the Cranberry Point project uses 82 Tesla Megapack 2XL energy storage units.
As of April 2025, ISO-NE indicated that energy storage made up 45% of the projects in its interconnection request queue.
The independent system operator also noted that, despite substantial investments in modernising the transmission system to enable the free flow of low-cost power, additional upgrades to both transmission and distribution systems will be needed to accommodate large volumes of diverse renewable energy sources.
Plus Power further highlighted that Cross Town and Cranberry Point were also 100% available and at full capacity during the Winter Storm Fern, providing reinforcements to ISO New England and helping maintain power for its customers.
