Heat pumps are significantly more efficient than traditional heating and cooling equipment, which means they cost less to operate. In fact, they can cut your heating and cooling bills in half, and sometimes more. Who wouldn’t want that deal? But there’s a problem. Finding a qualified installer is often difficult and expensive.

Jetson Air today announced the introduction of a new line of heat pumps that come with several advantages, such as an airflow monitoring system that automatically notifies users when it is time to change the filters, real-time performance alerts, constant monitoring of energy usage, over-the-air updates, indoor air quality monitoring, and the ability to know how the system is performing remotely via an app.

That’s all pretty good stuff. You could say that Jetson Air is the Tesla of heat pumps. But there is something else about the product that will make homeowners smile. The Jetson Air heat pumps are installed by trained, factory-certified professionals, which the company says lowers installation cost by about 50 percent.

Learning From Experience

Several years ago, I bought three heat pumps online for two guest cottages on my property. The price was right, but the installation costs were outrageous. I was almost sorry I bought them when I found out how expensive it would be to have them installed. I finally found a local gypsy oil burner technician who said he could do the work, but that meant I was on my own when it came to warranties on the equipment.

Everything was hunky-dory until my wife and I went on vacation one February. One of the heat pumps decided to stop working, which meant the pipes froze. When a pipe burst, the resulting damage came to more than $13,000, so my money-saving investment in heat pumps became a very expensive lesson. Live and learn.

Jetson Air One-Day Installation

The Jetson Air heat pump features one-day installation at prices that are approximately half the cost of traditional contractors. Jetson Air integrates seamlessly with existing duct work, delivering quiet operation and performing reliably in cold climates down to -22°F (-30°C). That part about integrating with existing duct work is pretty important for people who have forced-hot-air systems or central air conditioning in their homes, as it means a cleaner, neater installation with fewer cables and refrigerant lines visible.

The company points out that the combination of cost savings and advanced technology offers homeowners a complete heat pump platform that’s more affordable and is designed to remain reliable and become increasingly efficient over time.

“Jetson Air is bringing the same kind of innovation to your home’s heating and cooling that Tesla brought to your driveway, smart, electric, and built for the future,” said Stephen Lake, co-founder and CEO of Jetson. “Most heat pump systems today are still made and installed by companies rooted in gas equipment; they know hardware, not software. That’s a problem, because software is what unlocks real gains in efficiency, comfort, and control. Jetson Air uses continuous software updates, monitoring and smart optimization to make your home more comfortable and your system more efficient, all while getting better over time.”

Before co-founding Jetson, Lake’s wearable technology company North (previously Thalmic Labs) grew to 400 employees before being acquired by Google in 2020. After completing the transition of North’s products to Google, he drew on his experience in consumer electronics and smarthome technology to focus on the aspects of heat pumps that most directly impact homeowners, as well as the complexities that have held the industry back, specifically in North America.

The result is a heat pump system explicitly designed for Jetson, and integrated with air quality sensors, an energy monitor, and a Jetson smart thermostat. Jetson Air’s smart features will also enable system optimization around time-of-use rates and demand-response events in the future, helping customers save money on their bills, support a more resilient grid, and reduce carbon emissions.

“I have been closely monitoring my home’s energy use and carbon emissions, so I was able to notice a significant difference after switching to an all-electric system with Jetson,” said Robin Macqueen, a North Vancouver homeowner and Jetson customer. “During the first six months after installation, my gas bill decreased by $474 compared with the previous year, while my electric bill increased only $168, for a net savings of $306.

“I calculate that our CO2 emissions were reduced by 2.2 tonnes over the same six month period. These savings over six months are nearly equivalent to the emissions of one return flight to Europe. We also benefited from summer cooling, which our gas furnace hadn’t provided. Additionally, the process of going electric was much simpler than I had anticipated, with an online quote and installation in a single day.”

Online Pricing

Jetson has redefined the entire customer experience to make adoption easier and more affordable. Its fully online system provides transparent pricing in just minutes, eliminating the need for in-home sales visits and complex estimates. By sourcing equipment directly from the factory and using its own specialized local installation teams, Jetson removes intermediaries, reduces the risk of errors, and passes significant savings on to homeowners. With Jetson Care and the Jetson App, customers can enjoy a system that is easy to own, continuously monitored, proactively maintained, and designed to last, for about half the cost of traditional options.

Jetson Care is a 10-year fully inclusive warranty and subscription service that covers 24/7 monitoring, maintenance, and annual check-ups, giving homeowners peace of mind and protection from unexpected repair costs. Jetson also offers a smartphone app that helps customers track their energy use, monitor indoor air quality, and receive maintenance alerts to manage comfort and efficiency in real-time.

The cost of the subscription service is $49 a month, which may seem high to many folks. But on the other hand, it guarantees repairs will be made in a timely manner by trained professionals. Oil furnaces need annual maintenance, which can cost up to $300. That does not include the cost of replacing any components that have worn out. Is $600 a year a bit steep? Perhaps, but peace of mind is something you can’t put a price on. I would gladly have paid that to avoid the $13,000 repair bill from frozen pipes at my home.

Customers in Massachusetts, Colorado, and British Columbia have already experienced the benefits of Jetson’s streamlined installation process. The company is now expanding into new markets, including New York.
