Baltic BESS projects sold by Aura Power in Lithuania, Danish Sun Energy in Latvia

The Baltic States’ balancing capacity demand is projected to reach 1,500MW by the end of 2025, developer Aura Power said commenting on its transaction, presenting substantial opportunities in the balancing and ancillary services markets.

Aura Power sells Lithuania BESS to local investment vehicle

Aura Power has divested the 50MW/100MWh Kaišiadorys battery energy storage system (BESS) project to a local company called UAB Karjerų linija, it said earlier this week (7 July).

The project in Kaišiadorys, a town which sits equidistance between the major cities of Kaunas and Vilnius, was co-developed with Balancy Grid, a renewables developer and services provider.

Aura Power said the project is strategically located in Central Lithuania and will significantly contribute to the country’s energy independence and grid stability. It has a ‘near term’ grid connection date and UAB Karjerų linija will progress the project into construction and operation.

Lithuania is targeting 100% renewable energy consumption by 2028, with intermittent generation from solar and wind driving the need for large-scale energy storage. This is particularly the case after the closure of the Ignalina nuclear power plant, Aura added.

Last week saw Ignitis Group take a final investment decision (FID) on three large-scale BESS in Lithuania totalling 291MW/582MWh.

Aura is active in BESS development elsewhere, including in the UK, Italy and North America.

Sunotec buys Latvian solar-BESS project from Danish Sun Energy

Bulgarian-headquartered solar engineering company Sunotec has acquired 100% of the SIA DSE Lazas Solar project, which combines solar and battery storage facilities, from Danish Sun Energy. 

The project will be developed as a hybrid installation, combining 400MWp of solar capacity with a 600MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). Located in Cīrava Rural Territory, Lazas Parish, Dienvidkurzeme Municipality, the project is slated for commissioning in March 2027, with construction expected to begin by the end of 2025. 

The project will be built by Sunotec and include the construction of a 330kV substation located near Padure, which will connect to a 330kV high-voltage transmission line on the Latvian national grid. The first phase of the project received ready-to-build status in June 2025, with the total investment in the solar and battery energy storage park estimated at up to €245 million (US$287 million). 

Sunotec plans to install solar panels with a total capacity of 400MWp, mounted on single-axis tracker systems. These systems allow the panels to tilt and follow the sun from east to west, increasing energy generation during morning and evening hours. This tracking capability boosts the park’s total electricity output by approximately 11% annually compared to conventional fixed, south-facing installations.
