Eolus sells 100MW/400MWh BESS to California utility SCP

The North American division of Sweden’s Eolus Vind has agreed to sell the 100MW/400MWh Pome battery energy storage system (BESS) project.

Located in Poway, California, Pome is Eolus’ fourth project sold in the US. It is under construction and expected to be operational in the first half of 2025.

Energy-Storage.news covered news of the project’s financing in early September 2024 (Premium access article), where analysis of the documents filed by Eolus with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) revealed the offtaker for the project to be Sonoma Clean Power (SCP).

SCP has a ten-year tolling agreement for the BESS, which allows the utility to use the system to store, manage, and dispatch stored electricity to its customers.

The company sold the 500MW of solar, 250MW of battery storage Centennial Flats solar and storage project in La Paz County, Arizona for an estimated US$104 – US$190 million to Copia Power in October 2022.

Eolus sold its first US BESS project, the 100MW/400MWh Cald project in Los Angeles, to Aypa Power in December 2021. Cald has a 12-year tolling agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric. (SDG&E).

The company has three other storage or solar-plus-storage projects in different stages of development within the US, for a total of six. These include the 455MW solar, 455MW storage Hoodini solar-plus-storage project in Yuma County, Arizona, the 126MW Roccasecca BESS outside of Boulder City, Nevada, and the 460MW solar, 345MW storage Solsken Solar project in Solare, California.

Hans-Christian Schulze, Country Manager of Eolus North America, said of the Pome BESS: “Pome will add valuable support to the energy system in California while realising significant value for Eolus and its shareholders. The batteries are currently being installed onsite, and our dedicated team is steering the project toward a successful delivery to its new owner.”
