Bright Saver, a San Francisco-based nonprofit, is helping to reimagine how people access solar power, especially those who’ve been shut out of traditional solar systems. Instead of a large rooftop array of solar panels and complicated permits, the company is offering an affordable, plug-in solar solution that can work for renters, people in apartments, homeowners with an old or unsuitable roof, or just about anyone who has a sunny area next to their home. Bright Saver provides plug-in solar panels that can be installed on balconies, patios, or yards, and which require only a standard outdoor electrical outlet on a dedicated circuit.

The Problem: Solar Isn’t An Option For Everyone

While solar power is growing rapidly across the US, about 70% of Americans can’t get traditional rooftop systems. Why? Because they rent, live in multi-unit buildings, have shaded or angled roofs, or can’t afford the high upfront costs. These barriers have left millions of people out of the clean energy transition. Bright Saver is looking to solve this problem. Its goal is simple: to make solar energy available to more people by removing the typical obstacles.

The Solution: Plug-In Solar Panels That Work Anywhere

Bright Saver’s solution is to provide a complete plug-and-play solar kit. Each setup includes two 400-watt solar panels, microinverters, a smart power meter, mounting gear, and a cable that plugs directly into a regular outdoor outlet (as long as it’s on a dedicated circuit). There’s even a mobile app to monitor your solar production and household energy usage in real time.

You don’t need a roof. You don’t need permits or a big loan. And you don’t need to feed power back into the grid, because the system is designed for direct, real-time energy use. That makes it ideal for:

  • Renters who can’t install permanent panels
  • People with shaded or small rooftops
  • Households wanting a more affordable solar option
  • Anyone looking to shrink their power bill and carbon footprint

How It Works: A Simple, Safe Setup

Licensed electricians install the system to ensure everything meets safety standards. The panels are set up on a flat surface like a deck or yard, tilted for optimal sun exposure, and then plugged into your outdoor outlet. Thanks to the built-in smart power meter, there’s no risk of electricity flowing back into the grid, so it works without the paperwork or net metering agreements typical of traditional rooftop systems. You simply use the solar power as it’s generated, reducing the amount of electricity you need to buy from the grid. Depending on where you live and how much energy you use, Bright Saver’s setup could cover about 20% to 40% of your electricity needs.

Pricing That Makes Solar More Attainable

Bright Saver offers two payment options:

  • Monthly Plan: $34.90/month for six years, plus a one-time $349 installation fee. After six years, you own the system outright.
  • Upfront Purchase: $1,849 plus installation. This qualifies for the 30% federal solar tax credit, reducing the total cost significantly.

There are no surprise fees, and Bright Saver handles everything, making it one of the simplest ways to go solar.

Built For Safety & Compliance

All components meet the highest safety standards, including UL 1703 certification for panels and UL 1741 for inverters. The systems come with automatic protection features to guard against overheating, overvoltage, and more. And since no electricity is sent back into the grid, there’s no risk of interfering with utility lines or needing special utility approval. There isn’t any information on the Bright Saver website as to what company manufactures the actual system, but in a recent interview with one of the cofounders of Bright Saver on The Weekly Anthropocene,  she mentions that CraftStrom is the only US supplier that they feel has “the right safety profile” that they are comfortable with.

Growing A Solar Movement From The Ground Up

While Bright Saver currently operates in the San Francisco Bay Area, the company is working to expand. People outside the service area can sign up for a waitlist, helping Bright Saver prioritize where to launch next. Bright Saver is also building partnerships with schools, community groups, and local governments to bring solar access to underserved communities and support climate education. By focusing on equity and inclusion, Bright Saver is working to make the clean energy transition something everyone can participate in — not just homeowners with big roofs and big budgets.

Want To Help?

As a nonprofit (with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status pending), Bright Saver relies on donations to grow its impact. Supporters can help fund solar systems for low-income families, with options to contribute for a month, a year, or the full 10-year life of the equipment. Every donation helps bring clean energy to people who need it most, and helps cut carbon emissions in the process.

Final Thoughts

Bright Saver is proof that solar doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive, or out of reach. With an affordable, plug-in system and a mission rooted in equity, the company is making it possible for more people to take control of their energy use and be part of the clean energy future.
