Six New Public EV Charging Stations Installed In Parsippany, New Jersey

While the installation of six new public EV charging stations in one place might not seem that important on the surface it is because Parsippany may have less than 30 public EV chargers total, according to various online sources. (The Parsippany-Troy Hills township has about 56,000 residents for context.) Adding six more public chargers could be an increase of about 25%.

More and more new public EV chargers are being installed continually in the US, which is the solution to range anxiety. It isn’t necessary to have electric vehicles with 600 miles of range and oversize batteries if there are enough public EV chargers available.

New EV charger installations fill in the areas that don’t have any EV chargers, or not enough, so EV drivers have more places to charge, reducing or eliminating range anxiety. At some point, there will be more than enough EV charging stations accessible to the public and there won’t be anymore range anxiety. Additionally, the more EV chargers available to the public means gas stations will begin closing at some point.

Bill Dato, the CEO of Encore Energy Group, answered some questions about the new EV chargers in New Jersey.

How many charging ports were installed?

Six public-access EV charging stations were installed to provide a convenient charging option for area commuters, tenants, and visitors.

Can all electric vehicle models use them to charge?

Yes, Teslas will need the Tesla adapter, otherwise this is a plug & play operation.

How do EV drivers pay to use the charging ports? Credit cards/debit cards, apps, or both?

App-based charging + Scan QR code for guest credit/debit card checkout.

What is the charging speed for the charging ports?

32A charging output.

What is the cost for charging?

$.40 per kWh charged.

10 Minute Idle Time Grace Period, then $5/hour.

What was the cost for acquiring the chargers and installing them?

Over 60% of the total project cost was covered by a combination of NJDEP grants and JCP&L utility rebates. Through the NJDEP “It Pay$ to Plug In” program, each plug qualified for a grant of $4,000. At six plugs, that resulted in $24,000 of savings. Additionally, JCP&L reduced infrastructure costs by $6,700 per port, equating to $40,200 in savings. With these incentive programs alone, 35 Waterview saved nearly $65,000. Our team at Encore Energy Group has a long history of navigating incentive programs for projects like these in order to deliver the most cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions.

How close are the new chargers to a main artery or highway?

Less than ¼ mile from the I-287 ramp and ⅓ mile from Route 46 in Parsippany, which makes them convenient for both local traffic and commuters. You don’t have to go out of your way to find them. That kind of easy access is exactly what EV drivers want, and it’s a smart move for property owners too. It’s the kind of strategic placement that makes this a great model for other commercial or mixed-use properties looking to add public EV charging.

From a business model perspective, it’s exactly the kind of dual-use, high-accessibility site Encore encourages. It serves demand from both the community and broader public, leverages state and utility funding to offset costs, and makes use of existing parking infrastructure.

Are there amenities for drivers near the chargers?

One of the conveniences of this location is that the chargers are installed at a prominent office complex right next to Waterview Marketplace, a modern shopping center along Route 46. Whether you’re an employee working in the building or a local driver stopping to charge, you can grab a coffee or run errands without wasting time waiting for your car to charge. The chargers are steps to Shake Shack, Whole Foods, Old Navy, etc.
