Tunnel boring begins for key National Grid clean energy project

A major milestone has been reached in strengthening Britain’s electricity network as a giant tunnel boring machine begins excavating a new power cable tunnel beneath the River Thames.

The 271.5-tonne machine, named Caroline, has been launched for the Grain to Tilbury project by Michael Shanks.

The project will construct a 2.2 km tunnel linking Essex and Kent, helping to modernise infrastructure that has carried electricity under the river since 1969.

The new tunnel will support the growing demand for cleaner, home-grown electricity across the network.

Upgrading transmission infrastructure is considered essential for integrating renewable generation and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The machine was named after Caroline Haslett, a pioneering electrical engineer and founder of the Women’s Engineering Society.

The project is also working with schools and local partners to promote careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: “Since 1969 the Thames Cable Tunnel has transported electricity under the river between Essex and Kent. But after more than half a century, it now needs replacing.”

He added: “This major engineering project is part of the biggest upgrade in Great Britain’s electricity network in a generation.”

Alongside improving energy infrastructure, the project will create apprenticeships, local jobs and training opportunities to support long-term skills development in the region.
