National Grid are giving out £624 million worth of contracts across 78 energy companies in England and Wales.

The cash is part of a wider £40 billion investment into upgrading and modernising the UK’s electricity network.

On one converter station project, a supplier has predicted that the programme could support around 270 local jobs and provide more than 3000 apprenticeship weeks.

Cordi O’Hara, President of National Grid, said: “Reliable, resilient and affordable energy infrastructure is essential to the country’s prosperity.

“By backing British businesses of all sizes, National Grid is helping to build the network that will connect people to jobs, support economic growth and create opportunity in communities across the country, giving people a stake in the transformation of our energy system.”

The programme will be carried out over the next five years and National Grid will work alongside suppliers to support maintenance to enable the building of new homes, factories and data centres.
