Climate-related disruption caused financial loss for 94% of businesses

Climate-related disruption has caused financial losses for 94% of businesses over the past two years, with almost a third reporting losses of more than $1 million (£740,000).

A new report from Sweep and Capgemini surveyed 1,000 senior business leaders across the US, UK, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Nordics. It found that companies are increasingly struggling to use sustainability data effectively.

Nearly four in five respondents said their sustainability data is not sufficiently integrated across their organisation to inform wider business strategy. This compares with 53% in 2024.

Despite the data challenges, 85% of business leaders believe their organisations need to transform for the low-carbon economy, while 86% see the transition as a growth opportunity.

AI is increasingly being used to improve sustainability decision-making, with 79% saying its adoption has increased investment in sustainability.

The technology is helping businesses improve data accuracy, strengthen audit readiness and reduce the time required to collect and process information.

The report suggests better-integrated data and AI could help companies manage climate risks and strengthen business resilience.
