Hydrogen industry calls for stronger support

Hydrogen Europe and a coalition of industry organisations have called on EU policymakers to strengthen support for hydrogen infrastructure as negotiations continue on the EU Grids Package.

In a joint statement, the organisations argue that hydrogen networks must be treated on an equal footing with electricity infrastructure if Europe is to achieve its competitiveness, energy security and decarbonisation goals. They say hydrogen infrastructure will be essential alongside electricity networks to create a more integrated and resilient energy system.

The groups are calling for equal treatment of hydrogen and electricity infrastructure in permitting procedures, recognition of hydrogen infrastructure as being of overriding public interest and a stronger framework for hydrogen network planning, storage and cross-border infrastructure.

They also want more coordinated planning between electricity and hydrogen networks, along with greater support for integrated European energy corridors to help accelerate deployment.

While welcoming progress made by the European Parliament during negotiations, the organisations believe further improvements are needed, particularly in the Council’s position, to ensure hydrogen infrastructure can be developed at the scale and pace required.

Daniel Fraile, Chief Market Officer at Hydrogen Europe, said: ”An integrated plan for hydrogen, electricity, and gas grids is key to integrating more renewables at the lowest cost for citizens and business. Without the right conditions for hydrogen in this legislative package, we will miss a tremendous opportunity for a truly integrated and cost-optimized energy system”.

The joint statement will form part of the industry’s ongoing engagement with EU institutions and Member States as negotiations on the legislation continue.

Industry groups argue that coordinated planning across hydrogen, electricity and gas infrastructure will be vital to delivering Europe’s long-term energy transition.
