National Gas has laid out four key requests that it wants the government to take on board ahead of the Autumn Budget on October 28th.

The organisation is calling for Labour to increase its support for households this winter by removing the 5% VAT from gas bills, mirroring the tax cut on electricity bills.

It is also insisting that the government publish its final response to the Security of Supply consultation and announce funding for the infrastructure and market interventions that Labour wish to take forward.

Allocating additional funding to the Green Gas Support Scheme (GGSS) as an interim measure and launching the first Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model competition, to determine the location of the UK’s first hydrogen cluster, are the two final requests.

National Gas says that natural gas remains “critical” to the UK’s energy security as it regularly exceeds 60% of the country’s power generation on winter days.

It also states that achieving a secure, affordable and resilient energy system requires more deployment of biomethane and hydrogen.
