Nearly 13GWh of grid-scale BESS deployed globally in April

Innergex Prevalon Chile BESS
Chile is having a great 2025 for deployments, with 5GWh online so far. Announced by Innergex on 3 May, the 42MW/210MWh project located in the Atacama region, builds on the existing San Andrés BESS I project, which are both connected to the San Andrés solar facility. Image: Innergex via LinkedIn

A total of 4.5GW/12.8GWh of large-scale BESS capacity when into operation around the world last month, with Asia and South America showing strong figures.

That’s according to the latest monthly data from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, reported on as part of our regular series for ESN Premium.

The figures for April are in the table further down. China continues to dominate deployments, bringing online 2.5GW/7.2GWh of large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity, a little over half of the global total.

But the rest of Asia also had a strong month, with 647MW/1,765MWh of capacity coming online. A good chunk of that was from the first phase of Adani Group’s Khavda solar-plus-storage project coming online in India, Benchmark analyst Pete Tillotson said.
