Postman delivers carbon savings!

Royal Mail has cut its carbon emissions by nearly a third since 2021, helped by electric vans, cleaner fuels and energy efficiency upgrades.

The company’s latest Sustainability Report shows total market-based emissions fell to 1,085KtCO2e in 2025/26, a 31% reduction against its 2020/21 baseline.

Emissions were also down 7% year-on-year.

Royal Mail said average emissions per parcel fell 6% over the past year to 164gCO2e, which it says keeps it as the UK’s greenest parcel operator.

Fleet electrification is central to the company’s plan to reach net zero by 2040. Royal Mail deployed more than 2,000 electric vans over the last year, taking its electric delivery fleet to more than 8,500 vehicles.

Nearly a third of delivery routes are now zero emission and 44 delivery offices are fully electric.

The company said electric vans also cut running, servicing and maintenance costs compared with diesel vehicles.

Royal Mail has also started to decarbonise its national distribution network, introducing its first electric heavy goods vehicles in December.

It also deployed its first 80 micro electric vehicles across locations including London, Bristol, Brighton, Solihull, Newcastle-under-Lyme and the Scilly Isles.
